 La Lúcuma

The Huaches Zurita family has owned the La Lucuma farm since 1984. Initially it was 2 hectares and in 2005 it was expanded to 6.5 hectares. The family has always been focused in the production of high quality coffee and blessed with the altitude at which the farm is located, they planted varieties such as caturra, typica and pache. In 2012, the farm was affected by rust, so the Catimor variety was introduced, which reduced the quality in the cup and in subsequent harvests. The passion for quality and the dream of being a prominent producer at the national level led us to look for new varieties, so in 2017, they planted 0.5 hectares of geisha variety, which has set a new direction for the farm and the family.

The beginning was complicated, since the management for this variety is different from those already on the farm, but with appropriate advice, a lot of patience and work, in 2020, the first harvest was obtained and a very satisfactory result in the cup. In 2021, LaLucuma achieved 3rd place in the Cajamarca regional contest. In 2022, in the same contest, they obtained 2nd place, exceeding 91 points in the cup. All of this has motivated the Huaches family to participate in the prestigious Cup of Excellence in 2023 to compete for the award for the best coffee in Peru. La Lucuma gained 2nd place with a high score of 90.68 for its submitted lot of a washed Geisha.

Last August, we visited Simon and Merlith of Chacra Coffee, our sourcing partner in Peru. We cupped Franco Huaches's coffee for the first time. It was so good that we wanted to finish drinking the entire cup of sample. The floral notes was so intense and linering. We knew we had to buy some to share with our customers back home. This is a small purchase so we only have 4 roasts of this coffee. Grab this limited gem before it runs out!
